Site Architecture for Agents

How the structure of your site (URLs, hierarchy, internal links, and rendering approach) determines whether agents can navigate and understand it at all.

The way your site is organized is not a design decision, it is an access decision. Agents do not browse the way humans do. They traverse links, parse structure, and move on. A well-organized site gives them a clear map, while a poorly organized one leaves them stranded on page one.

Flat Beats Deep

A flat hierarchy puts most pages within two to three clicks of the homepage, which is exactly where crawl budgets are most generous[1]. Deep hierarchies do the opposite: they bury content behind layers that crawlers with limited time never reach. Google recommends keeping important pages no more than three clicks from root. Every additional layer of nesting acts as a filter that removes pages from consideration.

What Agents Need to Traverse Your Site

Each of the following is a prerequisite, not a nice to have. Miss one and agents start losing pages.

  • URL structure should be descriptive and keyword-bearing, telling agents what a page is about before they load it[2]
  • Logical hierarchy means categories flow into subcategories into pages, with each level tightly scoped
  • Internal linking ensures every page is reachable through contextual links, not just navigation menus[3]
  • XML sitemaps provide a complete page inventory that agents check before crawling anything else[4]

Server-Side Rendering Is Not Optional

Content critical for agent discovery must be present in the server-rendered HTML. Most agent crawlers do not execute JavaScript[6], so if your product pages, pricing, or key content loads via client-side fetch, agents see an empty shell. The fix is straightforward: server-render everything you want agents to find.

Common Mistakes

  • Infinite scroll without pagination means agents only see the first screen of content[7]
  • JavaScript-only navigation with no anchor tags in the HTML makes the site untraversable
  • Orphan pages that have no inbound internal links are invisible to every crawler
  • Duplicate content at multiple URLs without canonical tags splits authority across copies[8]
